AAO-HNS Applauds House Vote to Repeal Flawed Medicare Formula

ALEXANDRIA, VA —The American Academy of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) applauds lawmakers in the U.S. House of Representatives for today’s strong bipartisan vote to permanently repeal the flawed Sustainable Growth Rate (SGR) formula used to determine payments to physicians under the Medicare program. In doing so, the House addressed a critical Medicare issue that has long-plagued physicians and their patients.

“We are extremely pleased with the outcome of today’s vote,” said James C. Denneny III, MD, Executive Vice President and CEO of the AAO-HNS. “After more than a decade and 17 short-term patches, it’s taken far too long to reach this point. We are tremendously grateful to Speaker Boehner and Leader Pelosi for their leadership and bipartisan commitment to resolving this critical issue. We hope the Senate will act quickly to deliver this important bill to the President’s desk.”

Crafted over a two-year period, and with input from the medical community, the Medicare physician payment reform policies included in H.R. 2 represent a hard-fought bipartisan and bicameral policy agreement that will help build a more sustainable, fair, and efficient Medicare physician payment system that results in high quality, affordable healthcare.

If no action is taken, physicians providing care under the Medicare program face a 21.2 percent cut in payments on April 1, 2015.
